This image from the “Gedenkboek”, a commemorative book celebrating one and a half centuries of the Dutch Reformed Mission Church, depicts workers building the Steinkopf’s main street during the 1920s. This initiative was part of the government’s poverty alleviation efforts. The area faced significant unemployment and hardship following the closure of copper mines in 1919 and four years of consecutive drought. The program offered food assistance and temporary job opportunities through public works, including road construction. This development was crucial as it coincided with the introduction of motor vehicles into local transportation, which had previously relied on animal-drawn methods. The town was managed by a Board of Control, consisting of local councillors known as corporals, with the Springbok magistrate serving as the chairperson.
